Poll: Favorite Easy to Intermediate Solos

January 11th, 2006 § 6 comments

In the spirit of increased interactivity on this site, I thought I would make a poll. What are your favorite beginner to intermediate trumpet solos? If you like you can also explain why they are your favorite.

It is coming up to the time of year when most students are focusing on solos for solo and ensemble competition (at least in the U.S.), and I’m sure recommendations for good quality solos that can be played by younger students would be very helpful. Looking forward to hearing your thoughts!

For my students, I like to recommend solos by Balay (like Petite Piece Concertante) and Ropartz (like Andante et Scherzo). I like these pieces because they offer some technical challenge without being overly difficult, and they don’t require an extensive range. My students always enjoy them, as well.

I use several of the Vandercook solos with my younger students, followed by the “Concert and Contest Collection” (voxman?). I use some of the French solos mentioned in the previous post also.

I dont know any solos but I just love playing the Trumpet. I’m only 12 years old and im so proud of myself for finally being able to get the B ABOVE THE STAFF! Well, I’m also very happy to say that ive been 1st chair 14 times in a row in my Band class at school. I guess that about wraps it up then, I was glad to tell you my thoughts. Goodbye.

I’m 15, and I play in the Duncanville High School Wind Ensemble (Midwest 2005 performance) and I’ve come across a few solos I like… Andante et Allegretto by Balay, I like the solos like Arcturus for younger kids (I forgot the composer’s name, but all the pieces are named after stars or constellations). Fantasie en Bemol is a good middle school solo. Song of the Pines is good. If you’re talking on a high school level, Clarke’s Carnival of Venice is good for a Sophomore, Junior, or Senior, Handel’s Aria con Variazioni ( there was a guy that played it in freshman band and it broke my heart to hear him play it around 40 beats under tempo and get a 1). I played Sounds from the Hudson this year and am going to state solo/ ensemble contest and would reccommed that to anyone that can play a good high D.
