Routine Specifics

February 8th, 2006 § 5 comments

Craig, I really enjoy the articles regarding your routine. I especially like the way you list the exact excercises used. Oftentimes I find myself wondering what exercises you use in your skill set and where these exercises may fall in your routine. I realize that, since the articles follow a logical progression in a routine-like fashion, this article may be forthcoming. However, I am still quite interested in shortening the process a little. I also have the luxury of being here in person to ask you, but I decided to send in a comment just the same.

    Craig,

I second this. Specifically, I’m wondering what kind of progression you use in the Bai Lin Lip Flexibilities book and the Gekker Articulation Studies.

I can imagine how busy you must be, and I understand that the desire to post will come and go, but just know that your efforts are greatly appreciated. Keep ‘em coming!

    All the Best,

With a comment like that how could I resist posting! Thanks for the kind words. I’m glad you are enjoying the site.

As for routine specifics, I will be doing a more thorough article in the future, but I can quickly summarize what I normally do. My skillset usually consists of a Clarke study plus its Etude, then I do 5-10 Bai Lin exercises selected from each section in the book, after that I will do a couple of exercises from the Gekker, using single and multiple tonguing. If time allows, I will then do some practice on initial attacks and also do some “hairpin” long tones (start soft, crescendo to a loud dynamic, then diminuendo to nothing). The details vary day to day according to how I feel, how much time I have, and what areas need the most attention.

Another resource I use frequently is the “Mauric Andre, Daily Exercises” book. I think this has some wonderful exercises in it, and it offers a concise option for a productive skillset routine. I hope some of this helps.

    All the Best,
    Craig

    Roy,

The book is available from http://www.spaeth-schmid.de

They are a German based company but very quick and helpful. Delivery to England usually takes only a couple of days so to the US it should only be a week or so.

    Dick,
Thanks for the info! I found a store in Indiana that shipped it to me. I have enjoyed working it into my routine.
