Recital featuring:
Craig Morris, trumpet
Paul Schwartz, piano
Program:
Arthur Honegger – Intrada
Samuel Barber – 4 Songs, opus 13
Paul Hindemith – Sonate
Ned Rorem – Cries and Whispers
Eric Ewazen – Sonata
Why didn’t you go? Oh wait, that’s right, I forgot to tell youabout it. Sorry about that. My bad. Next time I promise to let everybody on here know. Really, I will.
This must be proof positive that your pracice schedule works! The Hindemith and the Honegger on one program is really impressive! It made my chops tired to read the program!
I really hope there is a CD in your future.

Hi Craig,
Really wish I could have been there to hear your recital! I would like to ask you about this Rorem piece you played – “Cries and Whispers”. I’ve recently heard of it, and would like to hear your thoughts about it. Is there any connection to the Bergman film of the same name? Mainly, though, I’m just curious about what it does musically. I’ve liked Rorem’s songs for many years, but I’m unfamiliar with most of his instrumental music.
Thanks!
Bob White
Bob,
Thanks for writing in. The Rorem is fairly new to me, but I have really enjoyed getting to know it. It is certainly not easy, either technically or musically, but I think it is enjoyable from a listener’s perspective. It opens with a loud, anguished cry in the trumpet and piano. This leads into the first of two extended cadenza sections that are very dramatic and flashy. It also has two long and melancholy lyrical sections: one after the first cadenza, the other at the end of the piece. The piece has loads of character, and is a valuable addition to the trumpet repertoire. If this sounds interesting, stay tuned, because there is a possibility I will be recording this in the near future for LivMusic. We’ll see what happens…
Craig
I’d certainly look forward to hearing it! Thanks a lot,
Bob
