I play almost daily on a Bb trumpet that I bought for $150.
I have a straight mute that cost $135 that I play maybe twice a year.
Go figure…

Well, this makes me show my age. Most of the Bachs I own cost me $250.00 brand new. It seemed they were that price forever (at least when I was in music school) That meant you could buy a used Bach for $150-200. The spare Bb I keep at school cost me $175.
I recently got a deal on a TrumCor Lyric mute for only (!) $50.00.
I’ve recently had a similar epiphany. I just had the Bach Strad (purchased new in 1964 for about $250) refurbished – resilvered, valves lapped, new leadpipe, new spit valve, etc. – for a little less than $1,000. I’ve obviously gotten a lot of mileage out of this horn, but it seems incongruent nonetheless.
