I can't figure out how to leave a note to you on this site, so I guess here is as good as any. The computer is still a foriegn invader in my life. Hell, I still prefer my LP's and recording on my minidisc.
I digress...THANK YOU Craig for providing such insight and motivation to this pursuit, by a few of us humans, to become better trumpet players, better musicians, and better human beings. Your site is wonderfully inspiring and very informative. I can't believe I never ran across it before.
Cheers to you!

Craig,

As a new reader of your blog, I'd like to request that one of the next articles that you bring back to the new site be "Dueling with Pinchas." I've seen that article referenced in several posts, and am interested in reading about the endurance exercise(s) it describes.

Thanks!

Howdy,

Since this is my first post I'll start out with a huge "Thank you!" for spending the time to maintain this blog. I believe your insights will truly help me become a better player.

I have a question about the pedals. When you say to keep embouchure movement to a minimum what do you mean by "movement"? When I watch myself in the mirror my lower jaw moves down when I descend and up when I ascend. I don't push my lips into the mouthpiece when I go into the pedals - my lips stay pretty much the same - and I get big, full first pedals (and I'm starting to hit them in the center too which is a big plus).

Is that jaw movement OK, or is that another thing I need to fix?

Thanks!

Joe

Hi Zeb,

I'm glad you are enjoying the site. I feel like #3 should be played no louder than mf. I often play it softer, but it shouldn't be viewed as a "soft" exercise. I try to play it at a comfortable volume on the softer side, and work on smoothness, connection, and ease. I hope this helps!

All Best,
Craig

Mr. Morris,

Thanks so much for reposting the Stamping It Out series. I am a newcomer to the site, but had read these articles a long time ago, and was hoping to get to refresh my memory.

I have one quick question. How loud do you play Exercise 3? I have heard it done anywhere from mp to ff, and would love your take on the matter.

Again, thanks so much for everything you share on this site.

Craig,

Congratulations on the re-design and on getting re-started with your writing! I have two blogs on Wordpress, and love the platform, the amount of customization that you can do is incredible!

Your site is nestled comfortably in my Google Reader, and I will definitely be keeping up with your musings!

Looking forward to seeing you in August; enjoy your time at Cabrillo!

Hello, Mr. Morris. I don't know how relieved you are from this run of MCB, but I will tell you that after practicing and playing only the viola for more than three weeks, I am so happy to come back to the violin. Call it the Bach-i-don't-know-anything-about-trumpets horn, it is heaven to come back to a right size instrument. (Yes, the viola is just not right, too long for the arms and too little for the legs). Now, any advice to take that 40 minutes long music out of my brain?
I liked your melody in Lolita's Dance, though. But that is not the part I remember, I have the one that sounds as a hialeah factory at 11:58 am in my head.
Keep writing, see you in gigdom soon.

Amazing playing Mr. Craig! I love your sound, seems that I have the exact same sound concept in mind(now the trouble is getting it to come out of the horn).
I know you probably hate this question but what was your setup on this youtube video? Were you using your Yammie?
Thanks!

Yes practicing for tomorrow is something that enough of us don't think about. When the chops don't feel right and we don't feel like practicing I also think back to what "Jake" use to say "play a G in the staff until the lips feels like normal" I still approach the trumpet at times with that in mind if things are not working right. I think it lets me just concentrate on the air and sound and not think about what is not working.
Craig I enjoy the Livemusic News, thanks.

Hi Larry,

Sorry I didn't respond to your question on the other post. Yes, the exercise is good for building range, but you will probably want to also dedicate some time to range specific exercises as well. I view range as a combination of strength and technique, so you will have to make sure the technique is refined in addition to building the necessary strength. I hope that helps.
